Young Kookaburras visit my home in Olinda, Victoria, every year. They become very bold quite quickly. I soon get to know who is who. Some are cheekier than others. I love having them around and watching their funny ways. Lots of stretching, flapping of wings, fluffing of feathers and resting in peculiar ways, flat out on the branches, while they observe the world around them. Their parents are never too far away. In this artwork, I wanted to capture some of these amusing moments.

The Nest Behind Me – Female Superb Lyrebird
Medium - Oil on Board
Size - 60 x 45 cm

Badger Weir, Healesville, Victoria (in Wurrundjeri Country), with it’s ancient fern gullies, and Mountain Ash trees, is one of the most beautiful natural places in Victoria. I was walking along Lyrebird Track towards the old weir when I saw a female Superb Lyrebird. She was walking gently about in the water and I remember thinking she was pretty relaxed about being close to a human. Then, after about five minutes, I heard a noise behind me at about head height in the embankment. There was the nest with her baby in it. Wow! But I moved on quickly.

These Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos frequent our garden, in Olinda, Vic
at certain times of the year, when the right trees are fruiting. Sometimes
you don’t even know they are there until you hear bits and pieces dropping
from the trees. They stay for a while until one calls out its’ mystical shriek,
and then they are gone.

‘Lucky Encounter’
On one of my walks one day, in the Dandenong Ranges, I noticed some fluttering birds in the
distance in the embankment beside the road. I saw flashes of an orange colour and then, moving closer still, I saw spots on these beautiful little birds. Being careful not to disturb them,
I sat close by and watched them fussing about a hole in the embankment where they were preparing their nest.

These birds were flitting around in my front yard. Quickly, I ran inside to get my camera. I could hear their tinkling notes but could not see them. Suddenly there they were, very close and how lucky I was to get some photos?
The Rufous Fantail is a member of the flycatcher family. It is a migratory bird and found in northern and eastern Australia in the understory of rainforests, dense eucalypt forests and mangroves. The more northern birds tend to stay in the north. It is about 15 to 18 cm long. It constantly wags its fanned tail from side to side and hops and twists its body. It hops along branches and up trunks of trees. With its constant movement, it flushes insects from their cover and quickly flitters out to snatch them.

Yongergnow Malleefowl
Original painting size: 107 x 62 cm
Medium: Oil, Texture Gel on Stretched Linen
A few years ago, while researching the South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo in south-west Victoria, (south-east South Australia and south-west Victoria), my interest was reignited in another bird that lived in the area. I returned to the Little Desert to learn more about them and find reference material recently. Although I didn't see any of the birds, I was taken to one of their amazing incubator mounds. They are another fascinating and clever ‘Megapode’
Still needing to find reference material I travelled to Yongernow Malleefowl Centre in Ongerup WA. These birds are difficult to see in the wild, when you are looking for them, so this was an ideal place to get the reference material needed.

Superb View - Superb Lyrebird
Size 36cm (14") x 56cm (22")

These unique birds are elusive and their coloring appears dull at a quick glance. If you have time to watch them you will become fascinated with their life and their beauty. Their coloring is not dull at all, in fact the rich color effects in certain lights are beautiful. They are skilled mimics. Not only can they mimic the sounds and birds of the bush but if they are exposed to other noises they can skillfully copy them as well.
The Superb Lyrebird inhabits temperate and subtropical rainforests from Southern Queensland to Victoria. The male performs a beautiful courtship ritual on his specially constructed mound of earth, spreading his impressive tail over his head as he sings his beautiful series of whistles, clicks and clucks and of mimicry
