Eastern Barred Bandicoots. Mixed media on illustration board. Approx A2 in size.
The Eastern Barred Bandicoot was considered extinct on the Mainland of Australia. However, some have recently been discovered in Hamilton Victoria, sheltering under car wreckage in a tip. Zoos Victoria coordinates a captive breeding program and works closely with the recovery team, to bring the species back from the brink.
The Eastern Barred Bandicoots, in this painting, are from Tasmania, where they are listed as ‘requiring monitoring’ on the Tasmanian Threatened Species List 1995. Nationally, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot is classified as vulnerable. So far it is believed that foxes have not reached Tasmania and they are working hard to keep it this way. Another threat to the Bandicoot is loss of habitat, which is critical to any creature’s survival and so it is important for me to include habitat in my work. Also, I do love to paint it.

Erin's Home - Greater Glider
52 x 88 cm or 20.5" x 34.5"
Sold
The greater glider is a marsupial possum and is closely related to the lemuroid ringtail possum. The greater glider has a flap of skin along each side as does the lemuroid, but this skin has evolved into an expandable membrane that allows it to glide. It is the longest glider in the world with a head and body length of up to 45cm and a non prehensile tail length of about 60cm. It can glide for up to 100 meters and turn in mid-glide. Their fur may be gray, dark brown or white. It inhabits the canopy of the tall eucalypt forests of the east coast of Australia and feeds on eucalypt leaves and buds and rests in high tree hollows during the day.
Erin was rescued by a wildlife carer. She had fallen onto a roof and broken her tail. Eventually her tail had to be removed but she recovered and was released back into the wild.
